SMF or PHPBB

Post by ReVoKe on Sat Aug 23, 2008 1:05 am

Both are free scripts

SMF: More flexable for high downloads or large bandwitch, lots of addons/theams avaible

PHPBB: better organized scripts with more admin Options.

Bandwidth and stuff doesn't affect SMF or phpBB. Bandwidth is given by the host, so I don't know what you're talking about. SMF saves bandwidth? Hardly, SMF churns out the most useless codes. phpBB can choose to bundle when as gZip output, SMF can't.

and no, there's more addons and skins for phpBB, do a google search.

Define flexible.

Which is more powerful? SMF all the way, you can bridge it to
everything practically, there are bridges for it already I believe.

Plus SMF can super easily integrate into your site, which is SUPER powerful ^.^ Like look here: http://www.110mb.com/forum/tip-cool-smf-variables-and-functions-t19574.0.html and that is a small fraction of what you can do.

Themes and Mods, their awesome and they install on SMF unlike how phpBB handles it, you simply choose a modification from www.custom.simplemachines.org/mods and upload it in your Admin CP, apply it, and your ready to go. With Themes, download them from www.custom.simplemachines.org/themes upload, and they are installed. Simple as that.

SMF
has 633 Mods in total and 411 themes. phpBB has 725 all together,
however, probably half (if that) are compatible with phpBB3, (I think
100 mods that work for phpBB3) and I don't see any styles under phpBB3
styles http://www.phpbb.com/styles/db/index.php?i=browse&mode=group:phpbb&sub=3

Almost
all SMF mods work with SMF 1.1.5, and most of SMF's themes work with
SMF 1.1.5 also. Like 1.1.4 themes and mods undoubtedly work with 1.1.5
(unless they are hard coded to only work with 1.1.4)

www.simplemachines.org

Oh,
and plus SMF is easy to use, its permission system is SO much easier to
use and learn how to use then phpBB's. And SMF has tight security

You cannot use phpBB3 to compare with phpBB2 because it's an entirely different script. The phpBB team actually re-coded everything from scratch again.

Anyway, there are themes for phpBB3, just not free. Themeing phpBB3 is not hard, in fact, its kinda easy once you get used to it.

Security wise, both scripts can be breached easily if presented to a seasoned hacker. Moreover you are using them "out-of-the-box" without any security modification.

I make it a point to custom code and rename all standard file folders in almost all, if not all, my scripts.

You make the theme in photoshop, like you would, a web template. Then slice it and code it. I don't code themes, I just design and send it to a colleague who do the codings.

I know how to code but not forums and wordpress, the only ones i know how to code myself totally is e107.
